The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is renovating the trail system at Rudolf Bennitt CA in Randolph and Howard Counties. Renovation goals are to improve usability, decrease muddy areas and erosion on the trail and improve trail maintenance. Renovations began in early 2006 and are expected to continue over the next few years.

The new trail design came from trail users, local saddle clubs and local businesses. Engineers and other professionals experienced in equestrian trails have been involved.

The Missouri Department of Conservation appreciates the involvement with local groups and businesses on designing the trail such as the Randolph County and Shiloh Saddle Clubs, Show Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen, Kozy Camp and Show Me Riders.

The new trail system is loop-based and crosses over the lake dam on the south side of the area. The trail will have a trail map, improved signs, creek crossings and trail heads, and will be designed to minimize muddy areas and erosion and provide for an interesting and safe ride. The trail will be 12-14 miles with two main loop rides 5 miles each.

Phase I renovations will:

The next phase will begin after July 2006 when more funding is secured. It will address the rest of the trail renovations, including the route itself and improved trail heads throughout the area.

A map is available to use as a guide for the temporary route until trail renovations are complete. Upon completion, a new trail map will be included in the area brochure which will be available on the area at bulletin boards, on MDC's web site, and from regional MDC offices.

During the renovation process, please exercise caution while using the area. The temporary route includes old paths that may be difficult to traverse in areas with steep slopes and creek crossings.

Trail users will see 4"x4" brown trail signs and larger yellow signs designating the new temporary route. Decommissioned paths are mostly filled in.

Thank you for your cooperation during this time of renovation and construction on Rudolf Bennitt Conservation Area.
